For the third time, Ranzo Fish Sanctuary (RFS) was recognized again as the Best Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the country at the prestigious Para El Mar Awards 2025 held at Zuri Hotel in the province of Iloilo on 18 September.

This recognition was awarded by the Marine Protected Area Support Network (MSN) in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Biodiversity Management Bureau (DENR-BMB) to MPAs, for demonstrating effective management, conservation, and active community participation in the protection of the sea and marine resources.

Led by the Fishermen’s Organization of Ranzo Chairperson, RFS Management Council President, and Bantay-Dagat Team Leader Roberto Roxas along with 34 other individuals who actively promote environmental programs and discipline in fishing, RFS was recognized for the main initiatives implemented by their organization, such as fishing bans in breeding areas, maintenance of boya maker, coral reef rehabilitation, mangrove planting, and regular coastal clean-up drives.

As part of their advocacy, the organization conducts alternative livelihood programs for students who are children of fisherfolks and ongoing environmental activities as campaign to broaden the community’s awareness about the importance of sea conservation.

RFS also promotes projects such as Ranzo Water Improvement and the planned establishments of a water refilling station for the benefit of their fellow barangay residents.

This is jointly supported by the Malampaya Foundation, the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) of LGU Pinamalayan, and the Provincial Government through the Provincial Agriculturists Office (PAgO).

It is expected that this recognition will serve as inspiration not only for RFS, but also for other MPAs in the province, in the ongoing effort to care and protect our environment and marine resources. (With photos from PAgO)
